Student Saxophones
The saxophone is the most popular instrument to be learnt by boys of school age. It is also popular with girls although there are a significantly bigger number of boys who learn the saxophone in school meaning it is seen as a more masculine instrument.
Because the saxophone is so popular with young children many saxophone manufacturers have produced student ranges of saxophones. Some parents opt to rent out their students instruments, just to see if their child will want to continue learning for a while. However most student saxophones are fairly inexpensive so it isn’t too much of a stretch to buy one when you know your child definatley wants to carry on playing.
The saxophone differs from string instruments in that a second hand saxophone is not considered a good quality instrument, whereas a 2nd hand violin will be aged and therefore will have increased in value. Also, although saxophones come in different sizes, this is because these saxophones are in different keys. A child will start on the same size saxophone as they will play as an adult. Typically children are started out on an alto saxophone. This is mainly because the majority of classical saxophone music was and is written for the alto saxophone. An alto saxophone also requires less air than its bigger counterparts do. This means it will be easier for a child to get a sound out of it. The alto saxophone also has smaller keys and is more suited to a childs hand.
Alto saxophones can be brought anywhere and everywhere. You can even buy one at the supermarket! Yamaha are a very reliable brand of saxophones however. They are expensive but reliable.
Yamaha YAS475 Alto Saxophone.
The Yamaha YAS475 is a good quality instrument that RRP’s at $1667. It is made from brass with silicone treated leather featuring in the note pads. The reasoning behind the silicone treated leather is that it makes the instrument last longer as the pads don’t wear out. The Yamaha YAS475 has an adjustable thumb rest which can be adjusted to the players specifications to ensure maximum comfort when playing and/or practising. The Yamaha YAS475 weighs 2.3 kilos. This sax doesn’t come with a strap however, these can be brought from any good music retailer in the accessories section. The saxophone will need a range of accessories including a cleaning rod and oil for the keys.
